As Hendrickson went to collect Rayna, Ari took Daisy back to bed. She hadn’t wanted to go to sleep, especially not when they were going to have guests. He promised if she was a good girl, he would introduce her to Rayna. They just had boring, grown-up things to discuss first. Things Daisy wouldn’t find interesting at all. For a second, he thought she might try and argue with him, but she yawned instead, hugged her teddy bear, and closed her eyes as he reattached the monitor to her arm.

He made his way back to his office and tidied up her coloring pencils and papers. Why did Rayna want to see him sooner? The purely male part of his mind thought it had something to do with the kiss. A more logical part figured it had something to do with her asking for help solving her dad’s murder.

A murder she can’t prove.

Did Ari want to get involved with that? It was a bad idea, but he no longer liked the idea of anyone hurting Rayna. He shouldn’t care. He needed the complicated woman for only one thing, but the more he got to know her, the more he liked her. It was a slippery slope.

Ari sat at his desk and opened the top drawer. He couldn’t remember the precise moment he hid the framed photo away. The photo was of Becca and Daisy, a few hours after their daughter had been born. The rabbit shifter looked tired but happy. The labor had been long and difficult, but it had been worth it to see the smile on her face as Daisy was laid on her chest. The photo always had a place of pride on his desk, until Becca was killed. Then he couldn’t look at her smiling face anymore. It hurt too much.

Hopefully, one day he’d be able to tell Daisy all about the brave, fearless woman who’d been her mum. He just hoped Daisy would forgive him for failing her. With a heavy sigh, he slipped the photo away, putting the reminder of his old life back into the drawer.

I can’t fall in love with her. Becca died because of me. I can’t risk the same thing happening to Rayna.
